Jr. Kindergarten
The junior kindergarten (JK) program provides students with the readiness skills for kindergarten. Classes are limited to sixteen students and are staffed by a teacher and an assistant. In language arts students will be introduced to the printed word in books, letters and sound recognition, reading strategies, sight words, following directions, and writing skills. Basic math is explored in number recognition, money, classifying, sorting, size and shape comparison, ordinal numbers, greater than, less than, and equal.to. Students also study units in social studies and science.
Jr. Kindergarten students enjoy resource classes which include Spanish, technology, music, P.E., art, and library. Field trips are planned around the curriculum as well as seasonal events. The playground facilities, located adjacent to the main building, have age appropriate equipment for recess fun.
In keeping with St. Luke’s mission statement of providing a superior college preparatory education in a Christian environment, daily devotions are an integral component of the curriculum and weekly chapel services are attended by students and staff.
Kindergarten
The Kindergarten Program at St. Luke’s is designed to extend the skills previously learned in the pregrades and/or Junior Kindergarten with activities that respond to the various needs of learners in the classroom. Every child is challenged to work to the highest level of learning, through small and whole group instruction, hands on experimentation, journal writing, music, reading groups, physical education, cooking projects, and role playing.
Kindergarten classes are limited to sixteen students. Each classroom offers a variety of math and language arts manipulatives, and learning centers. During circle time, math and language arts concepts are introduced through reviewing the calendar, reading stories, skip counting, and presenting skits. Kindergarten students enjoy resource classes which include Spanish, technology, music, P.E., art, and library. Field trips are planned around the curriculum as well as seasonal events. On Friday Sept 16, 2011 during the weekly chapel service at St Luke’s School in Culpeper, VA, Erin Mitchell’s kindergarten class shared and sang about creation. Wow! What a blast everyone had. This is fun. That’s the way learning about God should be.
Enrollment Requirements
Junior Kindergarten:
Age 4 by March 30th of the enrollment year. All students will be evaluated by the school for junior kindergarten readiness. Students not developmentally ready may be considered for the pre-kindergarten program.
Kindergarten:
Age 5 by September 30th of the enrollment year. All students will be evaluated by the school for kindergarten readiness. Students not developmentally ready may be considered for the junior kindergarten program.
